The Moscow Kremlin Museums are pleased to announce the exhibition of gem-carving masterpieces by Vasily Konovalenko (1929-1989), a remarkable artist, sculptor, stone-carver and jeweller. The Konovalenko sculptures aren't studded with gems, like a Faberge egg — they are gems, big chunks of semiprecious stone. In the 1950s, Konovalenko was a young set designer at St. Petersburg's “The exhibition "Vasily Konovalenko: A Sculptor of Gems" is a display of the sublime heritage of Russian stone carving – a craft that Russians have always held in high esteem. Vasily Konovalenko was called ‘Danila the Craftsman’ as the successor of eminent craftsmen of the Urals and heir to the traditions of Fabergé,” he said.

Around 1974, American wholesale diamond dealer Jack Ortman saw the sculptures on display and offered Konovalenko a house in the United States, machinery, and minerals with which to work. Konovalenko was always thinking of subjects and compositions he could sculpt, and what gems and minerals he could use to make them come to life. Stories in Stone documents the life and work of an artist that is little known in America, even though he lived the last few years of his life here creating some of his most interesting pieces.
